Meet Dr Roger Hammond and Dr Stephen Moate, the specialist orthodontists here at Northside Orthodontics.
Dr Hammond and Dr Moate are also members of The Invisible Orthodontist, an international network of specialist orthodontists dedicated to the use of invisible techniques to straighten patients’ teeth.
Dr Roger Hammond
It’s a rare privilege to be able to go to work every day to make people smile. The creation of these smiles and the relationships I have with my patients are what drives me to do what I do daily.
At Northside Orthodontics, I am very fortunate to have the support of my orthodontic partner, Steve, who I even studied with! While we treat out patients individually, we work together to assess patients and deliver our final results. None of this would be possible without our fantastic workmates who are the collective engine of Northside Orthodontics.
After graduating from the University of Sydney in 1989 with a degree in dentistry, I moved to Armidale then Byron Bay, where I gained invaluable experience treating the whole range of dental conditions in all ages and stages of life. I also took the opportunity to travel and have some great life experiences.
Ten years after graduating as a dentist, I was offered a position to study as a specialist in orthodontics. I returned to full time study and was awarded a Masters of Dental Science (Orthodontics) from the University of Sydney in 2001. My thesis on sleep apnoea devices was subsequently published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics. Since then, I’ve enjoyed all aspects of orthodontic practice, from treating primary school kids to people way older than me!
Outside of work in orthodontics, I enjoy life with my beautiful wife, Simone, and our six children. I love being in the ocean (preferably on a board) or, alternatively, watching it.

It is a privilege and a pleasure to be an orthodontist in Manly. Being given the opportunity to help create beautiful smiles every day is enormously satisfying, and living and working in the Northern Beaches community allows me the additional enjoyment of seeing our patients going about their lives with renewed confidence and a terrific smile.
Roger and I set up Northside Orthodontics over 15 years ago with the aim of becoming the best orthodontic practice on the Northern Beaches. We share a determination to set a very high standard of patient care and service, while maintaining excellent orthodontic skills, and creating great smiles. The staff at Northside Orthodontics are the backbone of our practice. They help us maintain the standards our patients have come to expect. We are immensely proud of all our staff and the practice we have created.
I graduated from the University of Sydney in 1992 with an honours degree in dentistry. I first worked in Orange, NSW, then as a Flying Dentist in the Northern Territory (servicing the Arnhem Land area), and finally in private practice as a general dentist in Sydney. This varied work gave me a strong background in all areas of dentistry, allowed me to experience different styles of practice, and helped me to formulate goals for my own orthodontic practice. I then completed my Fellowship at the Royal Australian College of Dental Surgeons, and completed my Masters in Dental Science, specialising in orthodontics.
I am married to Janelle, who is a veterinarian, and we have a son, Henry and a daughter Anna. We have two dogs (Maddie and Flynn). Outside work, I love the outdoors, especially jogging along the beach. I also love hiking, and am a passionate Swans fan. I am actively involved in our professional association, the Australian Society of Orthodontists, and am currently serving as the NSW ASO President.
